Scouting for Food Playbook

Overview

Scouting for Food involves collecting non-perishable food for donation to a local food pantry. It is one of the best service projects available to Cub Scouts as most of the tasks involved can be performed independently Cub Scouts, giving them ownership of the initiative. 

Action Plan

Planning & Preparation

• Register the Unit to participate in Scouting for Food with Sam Houston Area Council 

• Identify & Communicate with the Food Pantry that will be the recipient of the collected food (Sacred Heart Ministries Food Pantry in Manvel has worked well in the past)

• Identify Pack Collection Point for Collected Food 

• Review & Update Door Hanger Template

• Review & Update Kickoff Communications

• Review & Update Pack1402.org Scouting for Food Instructions

• Create Sign up Genius to allow Scouting Families to Claim Streets for Collection

3 weeks prior to collection date

• Email Kickoff Communications

2 weeks prior to collection date

• Resend Kickoff Communications

1 week prior to collection date

• Send Reminder to start Printing Out and Distributing Leaflets

Collection Date

• Send email reminder of Pack Drop-off Point

Closeout 

• Confirm and make delivery to the Food Pantry

• Take Photos of Food Delivery and post on BAND

• If the Food Pantry is faith based, the Drop-off could overlap with the AOL Duty to God Adventure Requirements. 

• Report # of Scouts Participating & Quantity of Food Collected to Sam Houston Area Council

• Attend the next Thunderwolf District Roundtable and collect Scouting for Food Patches

• Deliver Scouting for Food Patches to Pack Advancement Chair for inclusion in the next month's advancements.
